EIGHT IS ENOUGH FOR SIX WEST

After seven appearances at the Canadian Country Music Awards, the eighth time was the charm.

Abbey Powell and Jason Hastie, better known as rising country duo Six West, were one of eight acts

chosen out of 200 to perform at the New Artist Showcase at the awards held in Edmonton last

month.

The performance helped get their name out to people in the music business and the public.

“It created a lot of great networking opportunities and really changed the direction of our weekend,” Powell said recently. “For the rest of the weekend people were aware of who we are and we were able to get a lot of business done for 2011.”

In addition to the buzz they have in the industry, the duo’s tour schedule and unique dynamic have also generated positive word-of-mouth among fans.

“Most duos and groups have one predominant lead singer,” said Powell, citing Sugarland and Lady Antebellum as examples. “We focused on having two vocalists up front.”

“There are definite advantages for us at a live show,” Hastie added. “Our sound stays unique live and on albums and it sets us aside from other acts.”

That unique sound is evident on their current single, a remake of the Eagles classic “Desperado.”

“It’s popular because it’s different with a female voice,” says Hastie, adding the song is the top request from fans.

Six West reached a career milestone with their nomination for Country Recording of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards this year.

“I started crying at work,” laughed Powell of the nomination for the album “Beautiful Something.” “For a musician the first major award nomination is like winning the lottery.”

The three shows at Ralph’s will be a reunion of sorts for Powell, Hastie and fans.

“We love Ralph’s. There are always so many familiar faces there and radio has been really supportive there,” Powell said.  Six West performs at Ralph’s Oct. 28-30 at 9:30 p.m.
