Welcome to Six West Music

Every so often, fate presents itself in the form of a chance encounter or a candid conversation, but never has fate been heard as clearly or as powerfully as it is in the ornate songwriting and crisp harmonies that make Calgary based duo, Six West so resonant with listeners. After all, it was fate that originally brought these two accomplished singers together at the CCMA’s own roundtable session; they’ve been shooting for the moon ever since.

Not only did the stars align to bring Abbey and Jason together as an act, but these two artists, (each stars in their own right) allied with one another on their debut album, Beautiful Something following the advice of their managers and feedback from multiple fans and industry professionals alike. By pooling their talents as singers, songwriters and performers, Six West has developed a signature sound synonymous with brilliance. “Because we’re both lead singers, we know how to use our vocal abilities and complement each other through our singing style.”

The stage isn’t the only place that the dynamic duo has put their talents to good use and entertaining an audience is certainly not their only passion. “We launched our Six West Music for Kids Foundation last fall in Saskatchewan with the hopes of raising awareness and promoting music education in schools and communities through grants, music program support and funding.” Their concern for the longevity of music only adds to Six West’s list of admirable attributes.

What goes around comes around and Six West has come around as an up and coming act to watch this year, both for their commanding stage presence and memorable songs. Their different strengths only add to their cosmic energy, “Abbey comes from a performance background in drama, so she’s a natural onstage, while I (Jason) am more inclined to studio work and love to experiment with recording.” Although they’re not quite opposites, Jason and Abbey always attract an audience.

So was it really fate that drew these two star-crossed songsters to Calgary where they now reside, writing and performing music? “Actually, it was a combination of things. Abbey had family and was exploring options as an aspiring singer while (Jason) was a chartered accountant who was drawn to the music scene in Calgary. We were both really looking for opportunities as entrepreneurs.” Well, Six West has found more than opportunities and with an upcoming single and album, there’s no telling what the cosmos has in store for these two superstars.

About Us

Abbey Powell and Jason Hastie knew immediately they had discovered something special after meeting in 2003.  Both were chasing dreams of careers in country music, but after receiving an enthusiastic response from industry and fans alike, they began performing as a duo. They found a fresh country sound and began working with Canadian award-winning producer Bart McKay, who is also from their home province of Saskatchewan. In February 2009, with a distribution deal through 306 Records and EMI Music Canada, their debut album Beautiful Something hit stores. Featuring six songs written by Jason and Abbey, as well as songs written by well-established hit-makers such as John Rich, Byron Hill, Willie Mack, and Jason McCoy, Six West’s soulful harmonies came through with a blend of beauty and spontaneity. They have seven releases to Canadian country radio, including the remake of the classic Eagles’ Desperado.

2010 has proven to be an amazing year for Six West, garnering a Western Canadian Music Award nomination for Country Recording of the Year, as well as being one of eight artists chosen out of 200 to perform at the CCMA New Artist Showcase in Edmonton, an event that kicks off the Canadian Country Music Awards.

In addition to sharing stages with Aaron Pritchett, George Canyon, Shane Yellowbird and Aaron Lines, Six West has performed at the Calgary Stampede, Big Valley Jamboree, and a number of other established festivals in Canada.  They have also found the time to give back to the community by starting the Six West Music for Kids Foundation, which focuses on bringing live music into schools across Alberta and helping them to grow their current music programs. They would eventually love to spread this organization right across Canada.

Abbey and Jason are currently looking forward to the release of a new single in early 2011, and the release of their sophomore album shortly after. Six West's fresh country sound, passionate, original songs, and their strong, brilliant harmonies are sure to leave you inspired and wanting more!
